Borobudur Park to ring in 2018 with lantern-releasing event

Borobudur Park to ring in 2018 with lantern-releasing event

The director of Borobudur Park in Central Java, Edy Setijono, said on Friday that the park would be releasing thousands of lanterns on New Year’s Eve as part of the 2017 Borobudur Cultural Feast and Borobudur Nite events.
The activity is a result of the collaboration between state-owned companies and artists and musicians within the Borobudur temple area.
“Locals will bring the best quality food and products to the event,” Edy told Antara news agency, noting that the event would also feature booths selling local products.

The Borobudur Cultural Feast will also feature musicians such as Andien, Kevin and The Red Rose, the Java Ensemble and Orchestra and Gaharu Nusantara. At midnight, the lanterns will be released to ring in the new year.
“There will be 2,500 lanterns that will be released,” said Ayu Dyah Pasha, director of Cathaya event organizer. The lanterns, she added, were imported from Thailand and the release would be carried out by 200 volunteers. (asw)

Many people think modern communication technology is having some negative effects on social relationships. Do you agree or disagree?

Image result for english writing

The impacts of digital communication on human relationships have long been a topic of controversy. From my perspective, modern means of communication may sabotage one’s relationships with other people.

The most typical example of today’s communication technology is the mobile phone. Originally designed to provide people with instant access to telecommunication, it has become indispensable for most people in modern society. Nowadays, various features such as built-in cameras and interactive games have been added to the mobile phone, making it multifunctional and thus even more popular. However, I believe the omnipresence of mobile phones in particular, or digital communication tools in general, often interferes with the bonding time that people share and thus has a negative influence on interpersonal relationships. There is compelling evidence for my belief.

If people use mobile phones for work purposes, business calls may disrupt any real-life conversations they have. This is the case for millions of working people who may have overlooked the importance of having smooth and uninterrupted conversations with other people. It is possible that they are unaware that relationships are at risk of eroding when people spend less quality time with each other.

In addition, if people use mobile phones to play games, the constant urge to complete game missions may disengage them from social gatherings. For example, many teenagers sacrifice real-life socialising time for mobile game playing time. In the long term, this would be likely to cause friends to drift apart.

Some people use mobile phones mainly for virtual social networks, and notifications and messages from these sites may prevent them from having intimate conversations with their loved ones. There are many real examples of couples on the verge of breaking up because one or both partners have grown overly attached to social network applications on mobile phones, and they find it hard to maintain a sense of intimacy.

I believe that any of these issues could have a significant impact on a person’s social relationships. However, most people use mobile phones for all of the aforementioned purposes, and consequently they need to pay constant attention to their phone, potentially isolating those in their company. In this way, mobile phones may dull real-life interactions and affect relationships as a result.

In brief, the constant distraction of modern communication devices such as mobile phones may cause the breakdown of numerous social relationships.

TablePlus Relational Database GUI

TablePlus is a databases application GUI for many database engines. At the time of writing, it supports MySQL, PostgreSQL, Amazon Redshift, SQL Server, SQLite, and MariaDB. Support for Oracle and CockroachDB are on the roadmap.

TablePlus has two plans: a free tier and paid subscription model. The limitations on the free plan at the time of writing include:
  • Limit 4 Connections
  • Only 1 plugin allowed
  • Limit 2 tabs, 1 window, and 3 favorites
While the free plan is somewhat limiting, it’s feature-rich enough to allow you to try it out and see if it fits your workflow.
I am an avid Sequel Pro user, but one advantage that TablePlus has over Sequel Pro is support for multiple databases within the same application. It’s hard to find a decent GUI for SQLite, so this app might be great for working with SQLite. I find it very capable of working with MySQL as well.
Another product that supports multiple database engines in the same application is JetBrains’ DataGrip app, so you might want to check that out as well if you need a multi-database engine GUI.
Check out TablePlus.io to learn more and download the app on OS X. If you are on Windows, TablePlus should be releasing a Windows version in January 2018.

Lead singer of South Korean boyband Shinee dies

Kim Jong-hyun, the lead singer of the hugely popular and influential South Korean boyband Shinee, has died at the age of 27.

The star, better known as Jonghyun, was found unconscious at his home in Seoul on Monday evening in an apparent suicide, South Korean media reported.
Shinee were formed in 2008 by the South Korean company SM Entertainment, and belong to the genre known as K-pop – a highly visual form of Korean pop that incorporates elements of western music. They went on to achieve great success in their home country, selling hundreds of thousands of albums and singles.
In 2011, they broke the Japanese market and went on to become one of the most successful South Korean acts in the country: the Japanese-language version of their single Replay sold more than 100,000 copies there.

News of Kim’s death prompted a flurry of messages on social media, with many fans voicing disbelief.
A Twitter account devoted to K-pop photos said: “Sending our deepest condolences to SHINee Jonghyun and those who known him well. If you’re going through a hard time, please do know that you never walk alone. Talk to someone and take care of yourself.”
Another Twitter user wrote: “Today we lost one of the most talented artists in Korea. I’m heartbroken and devastated by the news.”
Police arrived at Kim’s apartment after receiving an emergency call from his sister, according to South Korean media. The singer was taken to a nearby hospital and was later pronounced dead, police said.
The Yonhap agency reported that Kim’s sister had received a text message from her brother shortly before his death that read: “Please let me go. Tell me I did well. Final farewell.”
The five-member boyband, with Kim as their main vocalist, released their debut album, The Shinee World, in 2008. They have since released five more Korean albums and another five aimed at the Japanese market – the most recent in January this year. All of their Korean albums except their debut have topped the charts in their home country.
Shinee are considered among the best live performers in K-pop and have won multiple awards for their complex dance routines. They have also become known for setting trends in South Korea – including popularising skinny jeans. The group are frequently referred to by the moniker “the princes of K-pop”.
Kim also had a successful career as a solo singer-songwriter. He released three records: an album called She Is in 2016, which topped the Korean charts, and two compilations in 2015 and 2017. In 2015, he released a book called Skeleton Flower, which detailed the stories behind his songs. In 2010, along with other major Korean artists, he contributed vocals to Let’s Go, a campaign song for the G20 summit, which was held in Seoul.
Throughout his career he collaborated with numerous other Korean artists and also hosted his own radio show on the Korean station MBC.
Kim last appeared in public at a solo concert in Seoul this month.

Taking Minutes of Meetings: Set the Agenda; Identify What to Note; Write Accurate Minutes (Sunday Times Creating Success)

Minutes are vital to the success of meetings. Attendees rely on them for information they may have missed, and they serve as an essential communications tool for non-participants. In addition, the action points highlighted in minutes act as a timely reminder for the whole organization. Taking minutes involves listening skills as well as the ability to absorb information and summarize it simultaneously. The minute-taker is one of the most important and powerful people in a meeting. Although the tasks can be daunting, it is an opportunity to develop knowledge, broaden horizons and build credibility within the organization.

Taking Minutes of Meetings is an accessible reference guide following the whole meeting cycle. Starting with organizing a meeting, it goes on to give reliable, hands-on advice about the sections of a meeting; the agenda; personal preparation; taking notes; accuracy; structuring notes; writing up the minutes and recording decisions and actions. It is aimed at anyone new to taking minutes and professionals looking to brush up their technique.

Toll rises to three dead after Indonesia quake

Toll rises to two dead after Indonesia quake

The quake struck at a depth of 91 kilometres (56 miles) just outside the coastal town of Cipatujah on Java island late Friday, the US Geological Survey said.

The tremor was felt across the island including in the capital Jakarta, some 300 kilometres (190 miles) from the epicentre.
A 62-year-old man in Ciamis and an 80-year-old woman in Pekalongan city were killed when the buildings they were in collapsed, national disaster mitigation agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said, while a 34-year-old woman from the city of Yogyakarta died when she fell while running out of her house.
"Several hospitals in several areas have also been damaged and patients had to be evacuated," Nugroho said.
A hospital in Banyumas suffered damage to ceilings, cracked walls and leaks to oxygen pipelines, forcing around 70 patients to be moved to temporary shelters.
At least nine hundred houses were also damaged in addition to schools and government offices across West Java and Central Java provinces, the national disaster mitigation agency said.
Jakarta resident Web Warouw, 50, was on the 18th floor of a building in the capital when the quake struck just before midnight local time (1700 GMT).
"Suddenly, we felt dizzy... We then realised it was a quake and immediately ran downstairs," Warouw told AFP.
Aid is being distributed and temporary tents have been set up for those who have lost their homes.
The agency was still evaluating the impact of the disaster and urged people to be cautious and stay alert.
Indonesia experiences frequent seismic and volcanic activity due to its position on the Pacific "Ring of Fire", where tectonic plates collide.
Some 170,000 lives were lost when a 9.1-magnitude quake and tsunami struck Aceh province in December 2004, which also hit coastal areas as far away as Somalia.
An earthquake struck Aceh again in December 2016, killing more than 100 people, injuring many others and leaving tens of thousands homeless.

9 great novels to help improve your English

9 great novels to help improve your English

Below, we reveal nine novels including William Golding’s Lord of the Flies and George Orwell’s Animal Farm to help improve your English…

1. The Wind in the Willows – Kenneth Grahame

This classic tale takes place in the English countryside and shares the adventures of the animals that live by the river. Grahame’s simple use of language with imaginative stories makes this a pleasurable read for both adults and children.

2. Lord of the Flies – William Golding

This book is a modern classic and a popular study text for schools all over the world. When a group of boys are isolated on a desert island, the society they create descends into ruthless behaviour. Golding uses dramatic and descriptive language, almost like poetry, that makes you feel as though you’re in the scenes yourself.

3. The Old Man and the Sea – Ernest Hemingway

Ernest Hemingway is well-known for his clear, straightforward writing style and short sentence structure, which is great for English language learners and many people have read it in school. It’s the courageous tale of a Cuban fisherman and his battle to land a giant marlin and it’s a perfect introduction to Hemingway as an author.

4. Animal Farm – George Orwell

This short, allegorical novel tells the story of animals rebelling against their human masters, and is a satire of Stalin era in the Soviet Union. Orwell uses simple English to appeal to all reading levels with a ‘less is more’ approach, and the animals speak in short, clear sentences.

5. Tuesdays with Morrie – Mitch Albom

When Mitch Albom reconnects with Morrie Schwartz, his former college professor, he learns valuable life lessons and shares with readers all the funny, insightful wisdom that Morrie reveals in the last months of his life. It’s a great book to pick up a more conversational style of reading and writing. It’s also a great book to be read aloud.

6. High Fidelity – Nick Hornby

A must-read for any music lover, this modern story uses a casual style of language and is written from the point of view of the main character, Rob, a heartbroken vinyl record storeowner living in north London. It has a quick-pace feel with short, funny conversations between characters that really keep the story moving.

7. The Giver – Lois Lowry

Lowry uses short sentences and simple grammar to create a story that’s attention-grabbing right from the start. It’s about a boy called Jonas and the community he is part of – where freedom, individuality and choice don’t exist.

8. Fantastic Mr Fox – Roald Dahl

Roald Dahl is one of the greatest children’s authors and very popular with adults too. Beginning with a children’s book is a good way to begin reading English novels, as they often have exciting plots and fun dialogue.

9. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time – Mark Haddon

This is the story about the adventures of a young boy with autism, Christopher. When he discovers the murder of his neighbour’s dog, he decides to investigate it. As it’s told from Christopher’s point of view, his matter-of-fact explanations for everything he sees are clear and easy to understand and take you on an intriguing journey.

Single Server Scheduling : Laravel 5.6

Founder of the Laravel monitoring application Eyewitness.io, contributed a great new feature to Laravel 5.6 (February 2018 release): single server scheduling.

To demonstrate the new feature, let’s look at an example scheduled job definition:

In this example, the inspire Artisan command will run every hour; however, the command will not run if the previous iteration of the command has not finished executing within the hour (that’s a lot of inspiration!).
However, one caveat to this approach is that the scheduled job will execute on every server your application is running on. So, for example, if you have this application deployed to two web servers and two worker servers the command will run on all four servers. Sometimes, especially when generating reports or cleaning up data, you only need the command to run on a single server. Thanks to Laurence’s contribution to Laravel 5.6, it’s now a cinch:

As you can see, all we need to do is add the directiveonOneServer to our scheduled job definition. Now the job will run hourly on one of our servers!
Note: When using this feature, you will need to use the Redis or Memcached cache drivers. These drivers provide the atomicity needed to secure the locks that power this feature.
I’m really happy to see this contribution because this is a pain point I have experienced myself and I *love* getting rid of those little pain points. Thanks, Laurence!
Laravel 5.6 is scheduled for release in February 2018.
